So it’s that time of year again. Pubcon Las Vegas 2015. Since the first one I attended in 2011, to the last one I spoke at in Austin this year, I always get some of the best digital marketing insights from people I meet at Pubcon.
We all scatter at the last minute to put the final touches on our presentations, pack our bags and get to our flights on time.
Some of us adding a few minor tweaks to our presentations the day of, others actually starting their presentation on the plane (I saw that!). We say goodbye to the grind for a week and go to learn, laugh and commiserate with our peers.
Learn and Network With The Best
As many have expounded over the years, aside from the panels – the networking is one of the biggest reasons you should attend. With 4 days chalked full of bleeding edge presentations from the industries top minds, and official conference networking events every night, sometimes it’s good to break away for a night and catch a show, see an attraction or just have a really nice dinner while you are in town. You’re in Las Vegas, why not enjoy yourself, right?
In no particular order, here are a few events and attractions you may find interesting if you are looking for things to do in Las Vegas while you are at Pubcon 2015…
1. Penn & Teller
On Monday October 5th over at the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio (yes, apparently they have their own theather?) kicking off at 9:00pm, you can check out the legendary Penn & Teller. A mix of snarky cynicism, magic and social commentary, you can always get a few laughs from their show.
Looking for some nightlife? On Wednesday night October 7th over at the Surrender Nightclub (inside the Wynn Encore Hotel), there is a good chance you can catch some serious vibes at the Flosstradamus show. I had the chance to see them perform at Lollapalooza back in 2010 and they put on a really exceptional show.
3. Book of Mormon
I’m not big on musicals, but this one really is funny as hell. If you have never seen it, at 7:30pm any night of the week during Pubcon, you can run over over to The Smith Center to catch this Tony and Grammy Award-winning Broadway hit by the creators of Southpark.
4. Zombie Burlesque
If you’re looking for a good variety show, you might consider stopping by the V Theater (inside Miracle Mile Shops) for the Zombie Burlesque show starts at various times in the evening from 8-10:00pm throughout the week.
5. Stratosphere Tower
At over 1,100 feet tall, with one of the most impressive views of the Las Vegas strip and claiming to be “the tallest freestanding observation tower in the USA”, the Stratoshpere Tower is a great place to relax and get some perspective.
You can kick back and just take in the view on the observation deck, or get a quick thrill from SkyJump, Big Shot, X Scream, and Insanity – the various rides available at the Stratoshpere Hotel, where the tower is located.
6. Helicopter Rides Over The Grand Canyon
Should you happen to have a layover or flight cancel as well as have the money and time, a helicopter over the Grand Canyon is a truly epic experience.
7. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House
If it’s food you are looking for, Del Frisco’s in Las Vegas is where it’s at. Get the filet mignon and Del salad, you can’t go wrong. Oh, and ask your waiter about the James Bond table.
8. Earl of Sandwich
One of my favorite sandwich shops on the strip, the Earl of Sandwich lives up to the hype. I highly recommend you stop by for a nosh if you happen to be near the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino (it’s located inside).
The Original, Chipotle Chicken Avocado, Full Montego and the Caribbean Jerk Chicken are some of the best they offer (in my opinion). From what I’ve heard though, almost all their sandwiches are top flight.
9. Arawan Thai Bistro and Dessert
If you can get past the seedy plaza it’s located in, the inside is really nice and the food is amazing. Their deserts in particular are really good and they have some of the best thai iced coffee I’ve ever had.
Definitely worth going a bit out of your way if you are looking for something different. Get the ribeye basil, pad thai, drunken noodles or chicken satay for your entree and try the vanilla bean creme brûlée or coconut ice cream with sticky rice for desert.
One of the best Italian restaurants in Las Vegas in my humble opinion. Their service has been phenomenal every time I’ve been. They have so much win on their menu, it’s really hard to go wrong if you love good Italian food.
I recommend the short rib and bone marrow agnolotti, beef cheek ravioli or lardo prawns. If you like classic dishes, their spaghetti is also really, really good. Try the strawberry soufflé, or amedei chocolate cake (with roasted almond gelato and salted caramel) for desert. You’ll thank me, or scorn me, later depending on your diet.
